Entrance to San Blas was a blast!
Had a slow sailing day from Isla Isabela to San Blas. Then the fun begins. We arrive at the mouth of the San Blas estuary about 5 pm, and prepare to enter as the anchorage is up the estuary a mile or so. It is written up as a tough entrance and we take lots of caution as channel is not only narrow, but shallow and has a rock wall breaker on the north side and a beach with surf on the south. We call the port captain who said it was safe to enter. Just as we are coming up to the first set of channel marker the depth gauge dips and reads 9 feet then without further warning we get a huge breaking wave that spans the entire entrance!! Needless to say we did an immediate about face, only hindered by another boat that was close on our tail to get into the estuary! Down the coast a few miles to find Mantenchen Bay, calm now in winter but home to some of the best surfing in the summer. Anchor without an other headaches and will wait until the next day to enter San Blas.
