March 10 we move further down the coast. We have very sloppy confused seas with 8+ foot rollers coming and going in all directions. Finally, we get to Melaque and anchor there with two other "kid boats" Endurance, 2 girls ages 4 and 7 and Journey 2 boys ages 7 and 9. Tonight is the first night of a week long celebration for St. Patrick's Day. Here they really celebrated the patron saint and there is no green beer! The fiesta includes a Carnival, with rides, games and great food! Churros with chocolate or carmel or strawberry hot filling was the biggest hit! The kids had fun on rides like bumper cars, with no gates and kids and adults getting into other cars after the ride started - it was quite entertaining! Then on to the square for the main event - Fireworks. Not what you might expect, but then we've quit expecting and just go along with the game while here in Mexico. Fireworks consist of an 8 x 8 base, bamboo structure that rises 2 stories into the air. Each of the 4 sides has four wheels with long spokes like a wagon wheel. At the top there is a "house like structure". A man in t-shirt and jeans lights the first wheel, as it begins to spin and burn, sparks start shooting out into the crowd. Some of these sparks come alive and zig zag through the crowd making everyone dance and shout!! This continues until all wheels have spun out and then the house on top begins to burn, shooting big fire works into the air!! All quite a sight but the display of fire is not done. A man with another bamboo structure the shape of a bull, carried over his head runs through the crowd as the bull shoots more sparks in every direction!! The crowd moves to and fro, old and young, babies too!! No one is hurt, no fires break out, the church does not burn and everyone has lots of fun!!! All quite a lot of fun, nothing like enjoying the firework display while being afraid of catching a spark. A real rush! Sorry no pictures for this one!!
HAPPY ST. PATRICK'S DAY!!
